Doon Lang
I remember this song from way back in my Boy Scout days. I entered (or my scout master forced me to enter) in a singing contest, and I remember the other contestants singing this song beautifully. I knew I did not stood any chance, so when it came my turn, I was real nervous. As I was going up the stairs on stage, I was wishing for a miracle that I would not be there; and presto, the lights blew out like fireworks and everyone started running away from the place except me. I had a big smile coupled with an exhilaration that I was spared from competing. That made this song very unforgettable. Now, here is my attempt to sing this song by Nonoy Zuniga, and hopefully, I will do justice like those boys back in the days did. For the non Filipinos out there that would be listening to this song, this would be a cultural lesson. Filipinos value education because it is education that will elevate someones status in a community. It may seem funny for some westerners, and I know, since I have been in the states all my life; but it is true that education is somewhat the equalizer in Filipino culture. The educated will rarely marry the non-educated or a prestigious family will seldom give their daughters in marriage to a man from a family of a lower status particularly if the man is uneducated. This song is a narration of a Filipino man who fell in love to a woman that is, status wise, above his level.
